With between 600 and 1200 indigenous grape varieties, there are numerous options that Turkish winemakers can pursue to make wine. Besides Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay, Turkiye produces local indigenous grape varieties suche as Okuzgozu, Bogazkere, Kalecik Karasi, Cal Karasi.. Archeological finds support the theory that wine was produced in Turkiye at least 7,000 years ago. With over 8,120 square kilometres (2,010,000 acres) planted under vine, Turkiye is one of the world's leading producers of grapes for wine production.
